The Classic Upper Dolpo Circuit is the ultimate Himalayan wilderness camping expedition. Spanning an epic 30 days, this journey plunges you into one of the most remote, culturally preserved, and ecologically restricted trans-Himalayan regions on Earth. Completely disconnected from the tea-house trails, your self-sufficient camping caravan will navigate the ancient salt-trade routes of the Bon and Tibetan Buddhist people. You will witness the breathtaking, turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake, conquer the grueling Kang La Pass, and explore the legendary Shey Gompa (Crystal Monastery). Traversing the high-altitude, wind-scoured deserts of Inner Dolpo, you will pass through isolated settlements like Saldang and Tinje before crossing the rugged divide into the Mustang region, finally concluding your monumental expedition in Jomsom.

Your monumental Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an absolute, rigorous gear check with your lead expedition guide to ensure your sub-zero sleeping bags and cold-weather layers are ready for a month off the grid.
You will take a short domestic flight down to the humid, subtropical plains of the Terai region. Nepalgunj serves as the jumping-off point for the wild far-west. You will spend the night here in a local hotel, staging your gear for the final push into the mountains.
You will embark on a long, rugged overland journey (or a flight to Juphal followed by a drive) deep into the Dolpa district. Arriving at the administrative headquarters of Dunai, you will meet your full camping crew, Sherpas, and pack mules, setting up your very first expedition camp.
A vital day to ensure all expedition logistics, food supplies, and restricted area permits are flawlessly organized before leaving civilization behind. You can explore the local Bon stupas and monasteries surrounding the town.
Your foot journey officially begins. You will trek along the banks of the Suli Gad river, plunging into a steep, heavily forested gorge. The trail undulates through dense pine, fir, and walnut forests, passing small, isolated winter settlements before arriving at the clearing of Chhepka to camp.
Continuing up the narrow gorge, you will cross the river multiple times on wooden bridges. The ascent is steady, and the forests begin to transition into alpine scrub. You will camp near Jharana, falling asleep to the sound of a spectacular nearby waterfall.
A steep, demanding climb brings you to a ridge offering your first mind-bending views of Phoksundo Lake. Descending through birch forests, you will arrive at the picturesque, mud-plastered village of Ringmo. Your crew will set up camp directly on the shores of the lake, famous for its mesmerizing, deep turquoise-blue waters.
You will spend the day exploring the ancient Bon-Po monastery perched on the cliffs overlooking the lake. This active rest day is crucial for your lungs to adapt to the 3,600m altitude before pushing into the extreme heights of Inner Dolpo.
You will navigate the infamous "Demon's Trail"—a narrow, unsteady gangway of timber pinned directly to the sheer rock cliffs high above the western edge of the lake. Leaving the lake behind, you will enter a spectacular, desolate gorge, camping in a sparse alpine forest.
The environment turns completely hostile as you ascend the Tuk Kyaksa Khola. You will cross the riverbed and climb a steep, rocky moraine. The air is exceptionally thin, making every step deeply fatiguing. You will pitch your tent in a bleak, freezing, wind-scoured rock basin directly beneath the pass.
The absolute physical crux of the expedition. You will wake hours before dawn in sub-zero temperatures to tackle the grueling, lung-busting scree slope up to Kang La Pass (~5,360m). The summit offers staggering views of the Tibetan plateau. You will then plunge down a steep, loose descent into the sacred valley of the Crystal Mountain, arriving at the legendary, 11th-century Shey Gompa to camp.
A profound day of spiritual and physical recovery. You will explore the ancient red-painted monastery, witness the deeply preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture, and perhaps hike up toward the Crystal Mountain kora route, surrounded entirely by silent, barren peaks.
You will cross the Saldang La pass (approx. 5,010m), navigating harsh, arid, desert-like terrain. Descending the far side, you will arrive at the isolated village of Namgung, featuring a spectacular monastery built directly into the sheer cliff face.
The trail descends along the Namgung Khola. The barren landscape opens up into the sprawling, prosperous village of Saldang, the largest settlement in Inner Dolpo and historically a massive trading hub for salt caravans coming from Tibet.
You will take a much-needed rest day to interact with the locals, observe their ancient agricultural practices, and visit the local gompas, immersing yourself in a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Pushing further north through the rugged plateau, you will follow the Nagon Khola river. The terrain is arid and undulating, passing through tiny, isolated farming hamlets before arriving at the remote settlement of Nyisal.
You will cross the Khoma La pass (approx. 4,565m), enjoying vast, uninterrupted views of the Tibetan borderlands. The trail is exposed to fierce high-altitude winds as you descend into the village of Komas to set up camp.
The trail undulates through the high desert, passing ancient mani walls and chortens. You will descend toward the Panjyan Khola, camping near the beautiful, culturally rich village of Simen.
You will walk along the wide, flat river valley. This route was historically utilized by the Khampa warriors. You will arrive at Tinje, a fascinating village that features a natural airstrip once used by the Tibetan resistance in the 1960s.
A final, major acclimatization and rest day before you begin the long exit toward the Mustang region. You will spend the day exploring the village ruins and preparing for the final push.
You will follow the Panjyan Khola southward, the landscape becoming increasingly stark and rocky. You will set up a true wilderness camp at Rapka, completely isolated from any permanent settlements.
Crossing the Chharka La pass (approx. 4,920m), you will drop down into the beautiful, walled village of Chharka Bhot. This is one of the highest and most spectacular permanent settlements in the region, bridging the cultural divide between Dolpo and Mustang.
Leaving the village behind, you will ascend through a massive, sweeping valley. The trail climbs steadily toward the high grazing pastures of Yak Kharka, where you will set up camp in the shadow of the surrounding peaks.
You will cross the formidable Niwar Pass (approx. 5,120m) and the Jungben La pass (approx. 5,550m), officially leaving the Dolpo region and entering Mustang. The descent is steep and punishing as you drop into the camp at Bherol.
Navigating steep, rocky canyons and crossing several high suspension bridges, you will arrive at the remote, cliffside village of Sangta, officially merging into the fringes of the Upper Mustang region.
You will climb a final, sweeping ridge that offers magnificent, panoramic views of the Kali Gandaki valley and the towering peaks of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Descending the far side, you will arrive at the village of Phalek.
Your final day on foot. You will drop down into the massive, wind-scoured gorge of the Kali Gandaki river. Battling the fierce afternoon headwinds, you will finally walk into the bustling transport hub of Jomsom. You will say goodbye to your incredible camping crew and enjoy your first hot shower in almost a month!
Because this 30-day expedition involves multiple 5,000m passes, this day serves as a critical safety buffer for any unexpected weather delays. If you are on schedule, you will spend the day relaxing in Jomsom, drinking fresh apple cider, and recovering.
You will board an early morning flight, soaring through the gorge between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Touching down in Pokhara, the sudden rush of thick, warm, oxygen-rich air will feel intoxicating. You will spend the afternoon relaxing by Phewa Lake.
You will make the final journey back to Kathmandu. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport, heading home with the elite, incredibly rare accomplishment of completing the 30-day Upper Dolpo Expedition.
